CPB Community Chat: Colbert Matsumoto, John Dean, and Duane Kurisu

In this episode of Community Chat, three influential Hawaii businessmen—Colbert Matsumoto, John Dean, and Duane Kurisu—come together as CPB board alumni for an insightful discussion. 

Colbert Matsumoto is the Chair of Tradewind Group. He previously served as Chairman & President of Tradewind Capital and Chairman & CEO of Island Insurance Company. Prior to joining Island Insurance, Mr. Matsumoto was engaged in the private practice of law for 20 years. Mr. Matsumoto is a graduate of Lanai High School. He attended the University of San Francisco where he received his bachelor’s degree before receiving his juris doctorate from the University of California Berkeley School of Law.

John Dean is a Managing Director of Startup Capital Ventures. Prior to founding the firm in 2005, he has spent more than 30 years as an executive in the financial services industry, serving as CEO of five financial institutions throughout the country. In 2010, John joined Central Pacific Bank, leading the recapitalization effort that paved the way for the bank's recent successes.

Duane Kurisu, aio founder and chairman, was born and raised in the sugar towns of the Big Island’s Hilo Coast with traditional values of Hawaii’s plantation culture. He graduated from Hilo High School and the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and in his late 20s, launched his first company in commercial real estate development and management throughout the islands and on the mainland. He soon branched out into a variety of business interests including the acquisition of his first media company in the 1990s, which led to the creation of the aio family of companies.
