Defending Against Phishing Scams in Hawaii

With the rise of phishing scams in Hawaii, it's more important than ever to be vigilant and informed about the various scams that could threaten your hard-earned money. In 2022, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) received 169 phishing reports, a significant increase from the 37 reports they received in the previous year.  

Here are some of the most common scams and essential tips to safeguard yourself against them. 

Beware of Phishing Text Messages 

Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and they want you to act quickly without thinking. Here's how to protect yourself: 

  1. Stay Calm and Cautious: If you receive a suspicious text message, remain calm and don't rush to respond. Scammers often use urgency to manipulate their victims.
  2. Read the Full Message: Take the time to read the entire text message carefully. Ensure that you understand what it is for versus what you are being told it’s 
  3. Never Click Suspicious Links: Avoid clicking on any links sent via text, especially if they prompt you to log in to your bank account. Scammers frequently use this tactic to steal your login credentials.
  4. Verify Your Bank: When in doubt, visit your bank's website by typing the URL directly into your browser or using your bank's official mobile app. Legitimate banks will never ask for your full card number or PIN. 
  5. Report and Delete: If you receive a text message asking for personal information, it's a scam. Take a screenshot to share with law enforcement or the FTC, then delete the message.

Guard Against Phone Scams 

Phone scams are another common threat, and scammers can manipulate caller ID to appear legitimate. Here's what you should do: 

  1. Verify Caller Information: Even if your caller ID shows it's your bank calling, remain cautious. Never share sensitive information like your full card number or PIN with someone who calls you unexpectedly.
  2. End Unexpected Calls: Whether it's a scammer impersonating your bank or a legitimate call, stay safe by ending unexpected calls and dialing the number on the back of your bank card to reach your bank's official customer service.
  3. Ignore High-Pressure Tactics: Scammers often use threats like "act now or your account will be closed" to pressure you into revealing sensitive information. Remember that banks never use such tactics.

Mobile Payment App Scams 

Payment app scams can be initiated through phone calls or text messages. Protect yourself by following these guidelines: 

  1. Hang Up on Unexpected Calls: If you receive an unexpected call, hang up. If you get an unexpected text, delete Always verify by calling your bank or payment app's official customer service number.
  2. Don't Send Money to Strangers: Avoid sending money to individuals you don't know or have never met in person. Scammers often create a false sense of urgency to trick you.
  3. Recognize Red Flags: High-pressure tactics, threats of account closure, or demands for immediate payment are clear signs of a scam. Legitimate banks do not use these tactics.
  4. Contact Your Bank Directly: If you're unsure, reach out to your bank directly using the phone number on the back of your card. Scammers can spoof email addresses and phone numbers to appear legitimate.
