From Friendship to Fraud: How to Spot and Avoid Romance Scams

Fraud Awareness: Romance Scams

Have you ever received a text from an unknown number, perhaps about confirming plans for a lunch date you never scheduled? Responding could lead to unexpected interactions, as the person may begin asking personal questions. Beware: this could signal the start of a scam.

How Romance Scams Unfold

Scammers excel at creating trust and building emotional connections. Over time, you may feel a genuine bond, believing you’ve found a close friend or romantic interest. They might shower you with compliments, express deep feelings, or even propose marriage—all without ever meeting face-to-face.

Eventually, the true motive is revealed: the scammer will ask for money, claiming it’s for an emergency surgery, to help a family member, or for a plane ticket to visit you. Once you send money, the requests often escalate until you question their intentions. At this point, the scammer may disappear, leaving you heartbroken and financially distressed.

Red Flags of a Romance Scam

  • Unknown Identity: You don’t know who you’re truly communicating with.
  • No In-Person Meetings: You’ve never met the scammer in person or via video call.
  • Emotional Manipulation: You feel a rushed or overly strong connection.
  • Financial Requests: The scammer asks you for money.

What to Do If You Suspect a Scam

If you receive a suspicious text or message, take the following steps:

  • Delete It Immediately: Do not engage in any conversation.
  • Cease Communication: If you’ve responded, stop all communication to prevent escalation.
  • Report the Scam: If you’ve lost money, report the incident to your bank and law enforcement, including the FBI and local police, as soon as possible.

It’s crucial not to feel ashamed if you’ve been targeted. Scammers exploit our natural desire for connection and are skilled at making you feel valued. Your safety and security are paramount.
